Quick Fixes: The Washington Redskins
By: Turner Sports Desk
While many believe the Redskins problems are much bigger than on the field, the Skins have a lot of talent and should not playing as horribly as they are. Jim Zorn is not the first young and inexperienced coach to be in this pickle. Perhaps he could take a moment to phone Joe Gibbs and talk about the Redskins season of 1981 and watch the America's game video of the 1982 Washington Redskins. He might learn a lot.

Joe Gibbs faced a similar situation when he started 0-5. Gibbs came to Washington with thoughts of Air Coryell but he wound up winning three superbowls because when he thought he was going to be fired he scrapped Air Coryell and utilized what he had around him. Jim Zorn and Greg Blache are at the same precipice. If you were head coach what moves would you make in order to right the Redskins? Here are some of my suggestions.
Quick Fixes: Defense
- Move Laron Landry
back at Strong Safety – Landry is a head hunter and a guy looking to blow
people up. You are wasting his ability, not to mention taking away one of your biggest
strengths by playing him so far back from the line up scrimmage that all he becomes
is a back stop.
- Move Carlos Rogers to
Free Safety – Carlos has a bad case of the dropsies, but the good news is
that he places himself in a position to drop INTs which is a good thing. Safety
is a position where he would have more time to either make picks or break up
passes.
- Put Brian Orakpo on
the D-Line – He will continue to be exposed in space as a LB.
- Sit Phillip Daniels – He wasn’t really effective at full strength and now teams know he’s hurt.
- Start Justin Tryon
– The kid has speed and he has shown an ability to make plays. He will take his
lumps but he can do no worse than what we’ve seen thus far.
- ATTACK, ATTACK,
ATTACK – If I am Jim Zorn, I’m gonna go down with both barrels empty. What
does he have to lose at this point?
Quick Fixes: Offense
- Move Santana Moss
into the slot and start Malcolm Kelly and Devin Thomas - It makes it very
difficult to shade coverage to Moss if you can move him around. Plus we need to
see what Thomas and Kelly have to offer.
- Replace Casey Rabach
with a bigger/stronger center that can hold the point of attack – Casey Rabach
is smart but he gets overpowered much too often to have a consistent running
game and pocket pass protection.
- Find a way to utilize
Anthony Aldridge – The Redskins need more speed and Aldridge has it
- Let your playmakers
make plays – You throw a fade to Malcolm Kelly in the end zone that does
not work but the defense is singling him up. Kelly is 6’4, 220lbs while the
Corner is 5’10, 200lbs at best. Why would you not try the fade again because
the odds are definitely in your favor? If Devin Thomas is a big guy with speed
then you 9-route him until he passes out.
Point is put the ball in the hands of your play makers
- ATTACK, ATTACK,
ATTACK – again, If I’m Zorn I have zero to lose.
Quick Fixes: Special
Teams
- Randle El out as Punt
Returner – Justin Tyron, DeAngelo Hall or Santana Moss
- Rock Cartwright out
as Kick Returner – Anyone with speed and a willingness to run upfield
What would you do if you were Jim Zorn/Greg Blache?
