Laron Landry is an ultra talented safety and I love him but
he is also what I call a zero-sum player meaning Landry will either make a huge
play for you or he will give up a big play. Since the safeties are your last line of defense it is very bad when your best safety is a zero-sum
player. If Jim Zorn wants to send a clear message to his team that he is not a
lame duck coach then he should bench one of his best players to send a message. Landry has all of
the tools to be one of the best safeties in the NFL but you can tell by his play
that his game is not evolving. All he
wants to do is blow receivers up which would be fine if he was actually good at it but obviously
he is not. Not to mention the fact that
if he does land one of those monster hits he will likely be fined and
suspended which actually hurts the team more than it helps.
So how do you fix this? Lock Landry in a room with tapes of
Ronnie Lott and Ed Reed. Ronnie Lott was smart enough to know when to blow
someone up and when to pick the ball off. Ed Reed is smart enough to know that
change of possessions (picks) helps your team more than big hits. If Landry
would simply play the ball instead of the man he would help his team more. For what it is worth he appears to be a
natural strong safety so maybe the Redskins need to place him back at his
natural position and find themselves a ball hawking free safety. The bottom
line is Landry cost his team this football game today. If Landry wants to be a
core Redskin and make a real difference in the future he has got to grow up and
even more importantly grow his game. Maybe riding the pine for a while might
place things in the proper perspective for him.
