First question, when was the last time you were excited about a Monday night matchup that did not involve your team? Yeah, I know right. I had all but given up on Monday night football until this matchup started to look really good as the season went along. I will come back to this point later.
Someone call the grief counselors for the Patriots because
the Saints not only beat them but they embarrassed them on the NFL’s biggest
stage. The Patriots are lucky quarters last only 15 minutes otherwise the
Saints could have easily hung a 60 burger on them. Last night marked the first
time in a very long time that a Bill Belichick team was both out coached and out executed. Of course people
will bring up the Superbowl versus the Giants but the Pats were not out coached
in that game as much as the Giants beat them up. Last night Head Coach Sean
Peyton, Defensive Coordinator Greg Williams and Quarterback Drew Brees made the
Pats look predictable on offense, young on defense and inferior in general.
If anyone had any doubts about the Saints being the class of
the NFL they can safely lay those doubts to rest. They are balanced, aggressive
and they are really, really good. By no means are the Patriots out of this but
I think the swagger the Patriots normally walk around with was just taken at gunpoint by the Saints. That beating was so thorough I think many beads are in order.
No matter who you were rooting for this is what Monday Night Football was supposed to be. Every Monday you would like to get together with friends or family and watch the best NFL matchup of that particular week. I could not be happier for the city of New Orleans and for the state of Louisiana. If anyone deserves a champion it is that area.
