General Manager Bruce Allen and Head Coach Mike Shanahan
officially began the Redskins house cleaning process by dumping the following underperforming
and often hurt veterans:
- Antwan Randle El – Good guy but overpaid and slowing down
- Randy Thomas – If only he could have stayed healthy. A core
Redskin
- Cornelius Griffin – Another guy that was limited by injuries
but a core Redskin
- Fred Smoot – Clearly lost a step but played with heart. A
core Redskin
- Rock Cartwright – If there is one guy I regret is on this
list it is Cartwright. A Core Redskin
- Ladell Betts – Betts could be super effective if only he
could stay healthy
- Todd Collins – Came here with Mr. 700 page playbook…had one
good run.
There are a couple more names on the list but no one of
significance. Other than the emotional attachment to a few core redskins like Cartwright
and Griffin I have absolutely no problems with dropping 12 million dollars of
dead weight. For those of you with hurt feelings because of these departures
get over it. This team was 4-12 so nobody’s job should be safe and I mean no
one.
Due to the Redskins past free agency follies they are being
mentioned with virtually every big name.
Clearly the new Redskins leadership group has a plan which is nice to
see. You don’t clear 12 million dollars in one swipe unless you have a master
plan so looks like Redskins Nation will burn some midnight oil to see what
direction the team takes. The one thing you can say for Redskins nation is that
the off season is always full of excitement.
