According to NFL Network's Michael Lombardi the Redskins were all set to
pursue Running Back Darren Sproles. The Chargers reported earlier in the week that Sproles would not be tendered but changed their minds and tendered him yesterday.
My first thought was they reported the wrong Darren. I was thinking they meant Darren Sharper which would be a nice pickup for the Skins at free safety.
The Redskins already have a 7 million dollar paper weight at the running back position named Clinton "You talkin bout practice" Portis. So let me get this straight, the Redskins O-line is in shambles and the first free agent the Redskins were going to pursue was a running back? As Scooby Doo would say...roh-roh raggy! I am going to give Shanny and Allen a wide birth but I am really confused by this.
Their are three positions a team needs to be strong at in order to compete consistently. Cornerback, Offensive line and pass rushers. I left QB off of the list because the position is more dependent upon others than people think. People who don't know football get mesmerized by guys like Peyton Manning and Drew Brees into believing that a team has to have a marquee QB in order to win a superbowl. Guess what...Trent Dilfer, Mark Rypien and other less than stud QBs have rings. Why? Because football is still a team sport. Granted some QBs are better than others but Joe Gibbs proved that in certain schemes you only need a serviceable QB. The Redskins do not to put another dime into the running back position especially with Mike Shanahan as Coach. The Redskins need Cornerbacks and you can never have enough pass rushers so I can understand the pursuit of Peppers. What I cannot fathom is the pursuit of a running back.
