Redskins and Vikings may swap picks on draft day

There are several factors that go into picking a partner to
trade down with in the NFL draft.
Need – The teams willing to trade-up obviously
needs something they could not get via free agency and likely won’t fall to
them at draft day.
Circumstance – The Trade of picks/players has to
benefit both teams immediately or in the long term.
Draft Picks – If money makes the world go around
then draft picks are the currency of the NFL. In order for a team to move up
they will likely be forced to give up some draft picks to do it.
Enter the Vikings:
Need: They need a
franchise QB no matter what Brett Favre decides to do.
Circumstance:
They are in a division that is a loaded with talented, young QBs likely to be
competing for the next 10 years (Aaron Rodgers, Matthew Stafford and Jay Cutler)
The Vikings know Sam Bradford is gone and Jimmy Clausen’s recent workout (which Viking
scouts attended) solidified him as a top ten pick. They know he is likely not
to slip past Cleveland at 7 or Buffalo at 9. They could wait it out for Colt
McCoy who is projected to be a high 2nd round choice but Colt’s
stock is on the rise and he could very well get drafted before the Vikings pick
at 30.
Draft Picks: The
Vikings have enough draft picks to trade themselves up to four with no problem.
They also have enough team depth not to suffer because of it.
Moving to the 4th spot would guarantee the Vikings Clausen over the
Browns and Bills. The Vikings can afford to swap their #1st rounder,
give up their 2nd rounder and probably next year’s third to get the guy
that will be their franchise for the next 10 years.
Many Redskins fan believe they are in pretty good shape
landing McNabb plus picking up an offensive tackle at #4 but the Skins still
lack quality depth. Teams that consistently compete for superbowls DRAFT guys that can
step in when the starters inevitably get hurt. For the Redskins the only way they
can turn one pick into quality depth is to trade down.
According to NFL network the Redskins have
already contacted the agent of Flozell
Adams so they are exploring all options with regard to filling the
offensive line. Jared
Gaither is another guy that is young and could step in and fill a tackle position
for the next ten years. It appears the Redskins front office is looking for
free agents so they can turn that 4th pick into many picks and the
Vikings might be the perfect candidate for such a trade.
